New safety measures announced at Alberta Children's Hospital
New safety measures have been unveiled at the Alberta Children's Hospital as a way to improve patient safety in the wake of several medication errors over the past year. None of the incidents were fatal, but an independent review was launched by Alberta Health Services. New initiatives include the development of standardized procedures for tracing and labeling all infusion lines, having clinical nurse educators spend more time with new staff to ensure proper routines are imposed, and implementing safety teams on each patient care unit.

Alberta to introduce changes to energy royalties
Changes to energy royalties in Alberta are to be announced Thursday with the release of a report on the industry's competitiveness. Energy Minister Ron Liepert is to make the announcement in Calgary, where most of the province's energy firms are based. Investment has plummeted in Alberta in the last couple of years since the province restructured royalties to boost government revenues. Wildrose Alliance Leader Danielle Smith says the royalty changes have been a costly disaster, and have dried up energy investment and jobs in Alberta. Her party has put forward a strategy calling for lower royalties, especially for natural gas, and faster environmental approvals for drilling projects. Smith says that approach could lure back energy investment and increase total royalties that plunged dramatically last year.

MLA floats idea of bringing beauty pageant to Alberta to attract tourists
An Alberta government backbencher is floating the idea of bringing an international beauty pageant to the province as a tourism booster. Edmonton MLA Carl Benito first suggested the idea at a meeting last month, pointing out the concept is popular in Asian countries. Tourism Minister Cindy Ady didn't dismiss the idea, but said more work would need to be done to figure out whether such an event would actually draw tourism to the province. Dorothy McKenna, executive director of the Lethbridge-based group Womanspace, says she is horrified by the idea. She says the province would be better to spend tax dollars supporting women in need rather than propping up outdated contests focused on how they look.

Drug charge dropped against former Alberta MP
Former Alberta Conservative MP Rahim Jaffer pleaded guilty today in Orangeville, Ont., to careless driving. Charges of cocaine possession and drunk driving were withdrawn. Jaffer, who is married to junior federal cabinet minister Helena Guergis, was fined $500. Jaffer was arrested last Sept. 10 after police stopped him for speeding in Palgrave, Ont., north of Toronto. The judge said he hoped the former politician recognized the break he was getting. Jaffer was first elected as an Alberta Conservative MP in 1997 but lost in his riding in 2008.

No airport tunnel for northeast Calgary
The Calgary Airport Authority is moving forward on building a new runway -- and there won't be a tunnel involved in the project. With the rejection by the federal and provincial government to the project, the City pulled the plug on the idea... for now. Plan B is to reserve the land necessary for the tunnel, so that in the future it could be built under the new runway if money (estimated to be in the billions) becomes available. Roadway improvements will also be made on sections of Country Hills Boulevard as well as 36th Street near McKnight. The improvements on those two roadways would cost $10.5 Million. Alderman Jim Stevenson is disappointed. "I believe in my heart it's going to be a problem in the next 10 to 15 years and it's going to be a real hardship on the businesses in the area." Airport Trail Access Committee Spokesman Grant Galpin is also unimpressed with the City's contingency plans, saying they will be completely insufficient within just a few short years. He's also unconvinced the airport will be open to building the tunnel once the runway is up and running. Barlow Trail between 48th Avenue N.E. and Airport Road ...
